This stunning hand knotted rug is a one-off piece. It has a design of stylised leaves and flowers in shades of aqua and dark brown with peach and soft green highlights. Ziegler and Co. is an Anglo-Swiss firm based in Manchester. It established carpet manufacture in Sultanabad (the modern day town of Arak in Iran)employing Western designers to modify classic 16th and 17th century Persian designs for the more restrained western taste. Bold, all over patterns with soft palettes replaced the more vibrant densely patterned originals. Never overcrowded, these patterns have a gracious sense of space and elegance. Since the 1980s, antique Sultanabads have become amongst the most desirable and prohibitively expensive carpets and are greatly favoured by interior designers and discriminating collectors. The desirable characteristics which make them so sought after have been reproduced here in an affordable modern version, made in Pakistan using the same techniques with the same high quality materials and sensitivity to balance of design and colour. The deep lustre of the yarn gives a remarkable and organic variety to the shades, yielding a multitude of tones when seen from different view points and in different lights. The yarn selection, colour balance and sense of proportion in the designs means they are the very best rugs produced in the area.
